Let’s Get Blitzen: Cocktail Advent Calendar – Day 9 – is upon us and here we have The Drunken Pear. This drink is a really interesting flavour experience that you might not have sampled before. Pear, ginger, lemon, honey and rye make for a delightful combination that is easy-drinking yet complex.
Also hoping your vision is blurred from the first eight cocktails so you can’t notice me hard at work shooting this cocktail in the mirror finish of this glass. If I wasn’t doing 24 consecutive days of cocktails, I may have spent some time in Photoshop but there are only so many hours in the day my friend. Judge me as you will.
I had my work Christmas party on Friday. It was an absolute lovely time and one of the best formats for a Christmas party I’ve ever experienced. Instead of a formal sit-down dinner where you’re trapped beside a few random people you’ve been assigned to talk to for three consecutive hours, we had a mix and mingle type format.
The party was held at North & Navy which and they served platters of much of their menu, from zucchini noodles with fresh burrata and hazelnuts to Cornish game hen to short ribs to all the pasta, there was no shortage of food. People could fill their plates at their leisure and grab a seat at the bar or stand at a high-top to chat with whoever they wanted.
I was pretty faithful to negronis throughout the evening, in an attempt to avoid a disastrous hangover the next morning. I’m pleased to say that I was successful in that effort. On the food front, I was dazzled by the Cornish game hen and loved their take on the Joe Louis – one of the dessert options on offer.
I absolutely love everyone I work with so there was no shortage of laughs and good conversation. I never dread Mondays because I know that I’m going to be surrounded by brilliant, hilarious people who make the day pass quickly – and I find my work very intellectually stimulating, I learn something new everyday.
Honestly, in my opinion, if you wake up and the thought of going into work fills you with misery, I think you should start looking for a new job. Life is too short to be unhappy everyday. You probably spend more time at work than anywhere else in a week, try to spend it doing something you love with people who you respect. I know it’s easier said than done but put some feelers out there, reach out to people in your network, invite people to coffee, see what happens.
In my experience, most often, people genuinely want to help and see you succeed – but you have to ask. Once you’ve found your dream job, or at least one that makes you happy, raise a glass to your success with The Drunken Pear.
Cheers!
