I honestly couldn’t tell you what most of the nominated films are this year but I look forward to adding all the nominees to my watchlist after seeing all the teasers throughout the show. In precedented times, I’m pretty adamant about seeing as many of the best picture nominees, preferably in theatre, before the awards show.

Most of the 2021 awards shows to date have been a bizarre hybrid of limited in-person attendance by front-line workers, first responders and celebrities, accompanied by Zoom acceptance speeches from winners wearing everything from custom couture to dishevelled hoodies (ahem: Jason Sudeikis). The Oscars however, have retained the formidable talents of producer/director Steven Soderbergh to shake up the entire format. Soderbergh has promised that the 93rd Academy Awards will feel like a movie.

It’s about time someone shook up the awards show mix, pandemic or not. I can’t wait to see what he has planned with a glass of this French 76 in hand. If you’re thinking this drink name sounds familiar, that’s because it’s a subtle riff on the classic French 75 – Ciroc vodka is used in place of gin.

Ingredients

• 2 oz Ciroc vodka
• ¾ oz lemon juice
• ¾ oz simple syrup
• 2 oz Piper-Heidsieck Champagne
• Garnish: lemon twist

Instructions

1. Shake all ingredients except Piper-Heidsieck Champagne over ice until well-chilled. Strain into a chilled flute glass.

2. Top with Piper-Heidsieck Champagne.

3. Garnish with lemon twist.
