I’m a Joan. The Mad Men character is definitely one of my style icons. I try not to fall hard for any trends, most of the time “what the kids are wearing” makes me feel old and stodgy, frankly, I just don’t get it. If someone could explain Billie Eilish to me, that would be great.
Instead, I reach for timeless silhouettes – cinched waistlines, straight-leg pants, pencil skirts, tailored suiting, closed-toe pumps and sheath dresses. At this point, I know what works for my body and I look for pieces that suit my shape and make me feel great.

This midi-length swing dress by Boss is exactly the kind of classic cut that I live for. The rich blue fabric and the tie-waist are just the ticket. I’ve dressed it up with this open-collar necklace by Lulu Frost (unfortunately a few years old but I’ve linked similar options) and ivory cap-toe pumps with a lovely gold detail running up the heel.
In terms of accessories, this JW PEI brown leather croc box bag is nostalgic of the structured handbags that enjoyed popularity throughout the Mad Men era. I’ve styled the bag with one of my treasured Hermès scarves tied around the strap.
I’m wearing my favourite stacked opal rings from JV Studios in Wellington West and I’m rocking my classic day-to-day makeup – winged eyeliner, subtle lip colour, a medium coverage foundation, pop of blush, and of course, brows.
I never leave the house without my brows on and if you see me without lipstick, I’m either headed to the gym or to bed.
I love this dress because I get plenty of wear out of it year-round. In fall/winter I’ll pair it with my favourite black tights, black suede booties and a leather jacket. For a more casual look, I’ll pair it with white sneakers and swap out the statement necklace for a sunhat.
Stay tuned for fresh fall style content coming up later this month! As this is only my second fashion post ever, I’d love your feedback in the comments below or shoot me an email or DM on Instagram – let me know what you like or what you’d like to see more/less of!
