This shaken sour drink is both citrusy and smoky. The honey rosemary ginger syrup brings subtle sweetness and a depth of flavour that rounds out the flavour profile of this little tipple.

The above image was inspired by a vintage jewellery ad for Trifari that I stumbled across on Pinterest. The darker backdrop than the inspiration photo yields a result that is more like Lady Justice meets Daredevil.
I’m quite happy with how it turned out even though the tone and mood is drastically different from the inspiration image. It was fun and, at times, frustrating figuring out how to execute the more editorial photography I wanted to have in this year’s edition of the calendar.

Citrus Garland Cocktail
A split-base cocktail made with equal parts mezcal and Cointreau results in bright, smoky sipper that is as refreshing as it is unusual.
- 1 oz Cointreau
- 1 oz mezcal
- ¾ oz grapefruit juice
- 1/3 oz honey rosemary ginger syrup
- 2 dashes fig & cinnamon bitters
- Garnish: grapefruit twist
- 1 cup honey
- 1 cup water
- 4 ” fresh ginger peeled and sliced
- ½ cup fresh rosemary sprigs

Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled.

Strain into a chilled coupe glass.

Garnish with a grapefruit twist.

Combine honey, water, ginger, and rosemary sprigs in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, stirring often, for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let sit at room temperature until completely cool.

Remove rosemary sprigs and ginger, store syrup in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three weeks.
