Let’s Get Blitzen: Cocktail Advent Calendar – Day 3 brings us this brandy-based Three Citrus Sour.
Three different kinds of freshly squeezed citrus juice make for a very bright cocktail. The egg white adds a nice froth and a bit of fattiness to balance out the acid.
Brandy is a bar cart staple over the holidays. A lot of Christmas tipples seem to call for this spirit, probably because it works so well in any number of warm drinks. I like to keep some apricot brandy on hand as well, just in case I want to dial it up a notch.
I’m always curious to see what other people keep stocked in their bar. I feel every home bar should have vodka, gin, whisky, rum, tequila, sweet and dry vermouth, Angostura bitters, citrus, cocktail cherries, olives, and big ice cubes. In an ideal world you’d also have an amaro and Cointreau. You can get pretty far with that combination of ingredients.
As you may have guessed, my bar is pretty well-stocked. I have everything from pine liqueur to rose gin, and all sorts of weird and wonderful things in between. At the moment, the “bar” itself is more of an abstract concept. I’m waiting on some bookshelves where I’ll store all my booze and cookbooks.
Until then, my “bar” is comprised of the central compartment of my media console, a carefully-styled tray on my island, in boxes in closets, and whatever other nooks and crannies I could fill with alcohol.
Once I have my bookshelf bar in place, it will be must easier to see what I have and craft accordingly. For those of you who have been following along diligently, you’ll know that I’ve been putting my own touch on my new condo.
The makeover is coming along nicely and hope to have the place just as I want it by end of January. I have been in a bit of a dilemma finding lighting to suit the space. As with most condos, ceiling lights are in short supply. I need to replace the ones that are currently in existence and buy some plug-in sconces and lamps to brighten up the rest of the space.

- 1 oz freshly squeezed orange juice
- 1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
- 1 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1½ oz brandy
- ½ to 1 oz simple syrup
- ½ oz egg white
In a cocktail shaker filled with ice add all the ingredients. Shake well and strain into rocks glass.
Garnish with a slice of orange, lemon and lime.
