2023 Let’s Get Blitzen: Cocktail Advent Calendar – Day 13 – The Grinch’s Martini. This year, I wanted to create a cocktail inspired by one of my favourite Christmas movies, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, starring Jim Carrey. The result is as green and off-the-wall as the mean one.
This is a weird and wonderful concoction that is a bit of an outlier from the other recipes in the calendar but sometimes I like to surprise and delight you, dear reader.
I know melon liqueur is probably not a product you have in heavy rotation on your home bar but I’m hoping you’ll like The Grinch’s Martini so much you’ll want to make it over and over again until your bottle runs dry.
I have seen some truly horrific cocktail videos on Instagram of creators whipping up Grinch-inspired recipes with FOOD COLOURING to achieve his signature mean green. I’m aghast. I would never have you put food colouring in a drink, instead we’re using melon liqueur to impart this bright hue.
I also contemplated developing a matcha cocktail to get a Grinchy green but maybe I’ll save that one for next year when I’m planning to do a “kitschy Christmas” theme for the calendar.
This spec is loosely inspired by the quirky “martini” recipes that predominated menus in the ’80s and ’90s. I’ve tried to keep the sweetness in check by not adding any syrups. The liqueurs and pineapple juice balance the heat of the vodka, coconut milk adds texture and depth, while the lime juice brings acidity.
Although it’s definitely outside my usual wheelhouse, I think the finished product is quite successful. I hope you’ll indulge me in shaking up this oddball cocktail and join me on Instagram Stories tonight at 5 p.m. Eastern for a step-by-step tutorial.
Cheers, friends!
