Well, well, well, here we are a new year, disappointingly similar to last year, thus far. I think we can all agree we were hoping to finally launch into the roaring twenties after a two-year postponement due to that global health crisis that shall not be named. I’m treating it like Voldemort now and no one will tell me otherwise.
While the world is coming up a bit short on its part of the bargain, I’m still here serving up inspired cocktails and mocktails for your sipping pleasure. As per usual, I’m kicking off the new year with a welcome respite for my system with Dry January and Whole30.
For my first official blog post of 2022, I am pleased to be partnering with Søbrii again and serving up this Spicy Passion Fruit Margarita Cocktail made with their 0-Tequila.
This post is sponsored by Søbrii.
An increasing number of Canadians are partaking in Dry January and are well-served by the ever-growing number of zero-proof spirits coming onto the scene. In particular, I love seeing more made-in-Canada products enter this arena. Low- and no-ABV products allow us to enjoy the art of a well-made cocktail, without the hangover.
Søbrii 0-Tequila was inspired by the artisanal tequila and mezcal distilleries in Mexico. Familiar heat and taste are achieved by infusing agave, the base component in tequila, with spicy jalapeño, hot black pepper, savoury coriander, and Canadian ginseng.
In cocktails, like this one, 0-Tequila replicates the taste of alcoholic versions for most people and can be substituted 1:1 in most tequila cocktail recipes. Much like the 0-Gin, the 0-Tequila has zero calories, zero sugar, and zero hangover.
There are a few key factors that differentiate Søbrii (which means “sober” in Latin) from some of the other zero-proof spirits on the market. First, Søbrii is distilled in Stratford, Ontario and was developed with support from the Niagara College research and innovation division. Unlike some other non-alcoholic spirits, Søbrii is actually distilled – which is how the 0-Gin has such great juniper-forward flavour and gives the 0-Tequila its distinctive agave-forward flavour.
The flavour profile of both products is sophisticated and versatile. For this Spicy Passion Fruit Margarita Mocktail I wanted to celebrate the spicy notes of the 0-Tequila by combining it with a very spicy Thai chilli syrup, freshly passion fruit juice, and freshly squeezed lime.
Join me on my Instagram stories tonight at 5 pm Eastern for a step-by-step tutorial on how to make this zero-proof cocktail!
Spicy Passion Fruit Margarita Mocktail
This spicy mocktail combines Søbrii 0-Tequila, a zero-proof tequila made in Ontario, with passion fruit juice, Thai chilli syrup, and freshly squeezed lime juice.
- 2 oz Søbrii 0-Tequila
- 1½ oz passion fruit juice
- ½ oz lime juice
- ⅔ oz Thai chili syrup
- Garnish: red Thai chili
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- 1-2 red Thai chilies* minced
Shake all ingredients over ice until well-chilled
Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass
Garnish with 1-2 red Thai chilies
Combine ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat.
Simmer for 5-7minutes, stirring occasionally, until sugar is fully dissolved.
Cool to room temperature and strain off solids.
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.
*If you’re a fan of spice, use two whole Thai red chilies with seeds and all. If you prefer a more mild flavour profile, use just one chili and remove the seeds.
