Let’s Get Blitzen: Cocktail Advent Calendar – Day 20 – Scotch Ginger Toddy. Can you believe there are only four days left of this cocktail gauntlet?
I hope you have been enjoying the content to date and have or are planning to make at least one of these drinks in the coming days to make SPIRITS bright.
This Scotch Ginger Toddy is a tasty little treat. The ginger liqueur and honey offer a beautiful counterpoint to the smoky, earthy Scotch. The flavour is borderline medicinal but in the best possible way.
In case you were worried for my health, no, I don’t drink all of the cocktails I make for the Let’s Get Blitzen: Cocktail Advent Calendar. Because I’m often making drinks in rapid-fire succession on weekends, I will typically only have a few sips from each to confirm the flavour turned out just the way I wanted it – it’s called quality assurance people.
I’m quite partial to the combination of rosemary with lemon and ginger so I opted to create this adorably little rosemary wreath to adorn the side of my new Irish coffee mug.
Making the rosemary wreath is quite simple – just requires a bit of dexterity, or a second pair of hands. Pull the ends of the rosemary together to create a circle and take a 4″ piece of twine and use it to knot the ends together. Tie a bow with the loose ends of the twine – voilà!
The rosemary wreath adds a nice scent to the cocktail and just makes every sip smell FRESH.
This is the first appearance of Scotch on the advent calendar and I hope those of you who are partial to this spirit are delighted by this addition. We did a Scotch tasting at my office a few months ago and I quickly came to realize that it’s low in my ranking of preferred spirits.
In the tasting, we sampled a Scotch from each of the six different regions where the whisky is produced and two Irish whiskies, just for good measure. Of all of them, I had a strong preference for those of Irish heritage (possibly being biased on account of having roots in the Emerald Isle).
I typically find I’m overwhelmed by the flavour of Scotch, whether its smoky or peaty, I definitely prefer American whiskies, namely bourbon.
So while you’re unlikely to find me sipping Scotch neat, I’m happy to enjoy it mixed into cocktails like this yummy Scotch Ginger Toddy.
Cheers!
In an Irish coffee glas, add honey, lemon juice, Scotch, and ginger liqueur. Top with hot water and stir. Garnish with rosemary wreath, if desired. Serve.
For medicinal purposes, Jameson whisky,3 cloves, hot water and 2 Tylenol!
Cures what ails ya!
Sound advice Elaine – I’m with you. Not surprised you would have a preference for the Irish whisky ;-).
