If you’re still reeling from an overindulgent holiday season and you want a reset, this smoothie bowl is the antidote you’ve been looking for.
I don’t know about you but I’m pretty skeptical of any smoothie that doesn’t involve any vegetables. This beauty gets its vibrant orange-hue from a combination of carrots, mango, oranges, turmeric and maca powder.
Whaaaaaat powder? Maca is a kind of cruciferous vegetable found in the Peruvian Andes. It looks kind of like a radish or turnip with green tops and roots that come in a rainbow of colours from yellow to purple or black.
Maca is rich in antioxidants and has achieved superfood status thanks to some of its purported health benefits: from increased energy to a boost in libido.
I brought this smoothie to my book club brunch meeting on the weekend. I can’t be sure, but I could have sworn that some of my friends were more frisky than usual after downing this maca cocktail. The jury is still out though, more testing is needed.
I found maca powder in the health food aisle of my local Loblaws – which tells me that this superfood is going to become more pervasive in 2018.
This smoothie has a bold citrus flavour and delicious creamy texture. This combination of ingredients yields a thick, silky smoothie that is best-suited to a smoothie bowl. If you want something a bit easier to drink, just add more coconut milk to the equation.
As discussed in my Tropical Green Smoothie recipe, I like my smoothies to have a bit of savoury/spicy kick to them. This Tropical Turmeric Smoothie Bowl gets its heat from a generous knob of ginger and a pinch of cayenne.
This superfood smoothie bowl will help you reset after an overindulgent holiday season. Packed with tropical flavours and the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric and antioxidant-rich maca, this is destined to be your new favourite smoothie.
Add all ingredients to a high-powered blender. Blend until smooth. Smoothie will be quite thick, add more coconut milk for a thinner consistency.
Top with desired toppings. Serve immediately!
